Happy Independence Day

Yesterday, i had an epiphany of what the future was supposed to be, not for me alone but for Nigerians. I think we have lost it as a Nation because we forget the Anthem as well as the Pledge. I had to take time out to study the Nigerian Anthem and to understand why we have deviated so much from the promises of the Anthem and the Pledge. My opinion is that, we have left it at the beginning of life's journey. So let's go back to the point when we were so eager and proud to scream the National Anthem, even when we didn't understand the words. Let's go back to the time when the Anthem meant something. Let's go back to when Nigeria was ours to build. Let's go back to when we appreciate the little contributions of others. Let's go back to the moonlight singing and dancing. Let's go back to the proverbs of our fore-fathers, that even without education they still articulated the future. Let's remember that the journey did not end when we failed the Nation but it began when we admitted our wrongs and resolve to restitution.

Arise, O compatriots,
Nigeria's call obey
To serve our Fatherland
With love and strength and faith.
The labour of our heroes past
Shall never be in vain,
To serve with heart and might
One nation bound in freedom, peace and unity.

O God of creation
Direct our noble cause
Guide thou our leaders right
Help our youth the truth to know
In love and honesty to grow
And living just and true
Great lofty heights attain
To build a nation where peace
And justice shall reign.

I pledge to Nigeria my country,
To be faithful, loyal and honest,
To serve Nigeria with all my strength,
To defend her unity,
And uphold her honor and glory,
So help me God
